Communion is the center of our worship service so it’s not surprising there are plenty of special items with special names. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t changed over the years.

A book from 1964 states there are five vessels required for communion, three more are optional, plus all of the linens. It also requires vessels to be silver with a gold lining or crystal. Much of this has become simpler over the years, with many returning to pottery and just the essentials: a chalice (cup), patten (plate), and one pouring vessel (flagon). The fancy items are special but the simple ones can remind us it is Jesus who makes the meal special.
