In the summer months we get lots of parables from Jesus. Originally it seems like Jesus wanted to keep those who were against him from understanding everything he was saying. Theologian Fred Craddock says, “Remember, these are not children’s stories” when Jesus talks in parables. Mark (4:34) tells us that Jesus explained to the disciples what these stories meant in private. We of course don’t have Jesus to explain them to us and the Church has developed a tradition about what many of these stories mean. We still should seek to try to understand what these stories might mean for us, here and now.
