The answer is a complicated, kind of. Jesus is given the titles and descriptions of Israel’s kings, even though he is nothing like an earthly king. His authority comes from the truth of who Jesus is and those who recognize the truth voluntarily follow him. Jesus isn’t interested in the kind of kingly rule that humans expected, which disappointed a lot of people in Jesus’ day. We look forward to the day he is ruler of all, knowing his victory will be a victory of love.
