Pentecost literally means “fiftieth” and is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday. It is also sometimes called the birthday of the church. It’s the day we remember the Holy Spirit coming as “tongues of fire” on the disciples and gathered believers. We wear red as a reminder of the Holy Spirit’s coming as a flame. Both a dove and flames are popular images for the Holy Spirit and the day of Pentecost. Pentecost is a day we particularly focus on the work of the Holy Spirit which continues actively in our world in and through the Church.
