Our readings of scripture each week come from the Revised Common Lectionary. Today, most Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian congregations read the same Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel readings. They occur on a three year cycle, each focusing on one of the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). Some days, like Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday have the same readings every year. While not required, the lectionary helps us to hear most of scripture over a three year period. It encourages preachers and lay people alike to talk about hard or confusing parts of scripture we might rather avoid.
