In the very early church, people would be baptized naked and then wrapped in a white robe to symbolize their new identity in Christ Jesus. Over time, these white robes became the “clothing” of all baptized Christians and wearing them in worship was common. Today usually only the people leading worship wear these, which are called albs. As we transition into the more casual summer season, it is still appropriate to wear white robes for occasions when we particularly remember our baptism–like this Sunday when we will celebrate the baptism of Ethan.
