The altar linen that is the color of the season and doesn’t go all the way to the floor is technically called a “superfrontal.” Most people just refer to it as an altar parament. Whatever you call it and whatever color it is, it often has symbols of the Christian faith and the liturgical season. Popular images include crosses, symbols of the Trinity, wheat and grapes for communion, and doves and flames which represent the Holy Spirit. While some are simple and some are ornate, they hope to remind us of the stories and presence of God with us.
